looks like the top 12 must all be PED users according to Fam, or else he definitely would have medaled.

Nelson did it at the trials. Sometimes you get in great shape and what is a new PR really didn't require a PR type effort. If Fam had run 8:10, then I would agree with you. 8:17, that's not his reason for laying an egg here.

Youcef Abdi did. PB in his heat, another PB and 6th in the final.

But I agree that Fam kinda sucked.

If you have never run the steeple then you cannot fully appreciate how easy it is to run just a little too hard early in the race and be in deep deep trouble the last couple of laps. Fam started with an agressive strategy, but the lactate bear came and ate him up shortly after mid-race. He did well to hang on as much as he did.

Maybe it was wrong for people to actually have expectations of Fam. Even with his quote about stealing the bronze from the drug cheats, i think we all still knew he didn't really have a prayer. I'm sure he did what he felt he needed to do in the race, and the real issue isn't that he tanked, but that even though he's in the same race, he's not quite at the same level.

Making the final is an achievement, however, and maybe he can improve on 13th at worlds next year.

Fam may be a self-promoting nonconformist but he did what Lagat couldn't do. Qualified for the finals in his event. Also, he was prophetic in saying that there are drug cheats in his event. Russian steepler Roman Usav tested positive for Carphedon and was DQ'd from Russia's squad on August 8th.

Hey Fam made the finals. That is more than you can say about Lagat. Hopefully a US 800 meter and 5k runner will make the finals. Stop expecting American's to get distance medals. It only happens every quarter century.

I corrected myself. We did get two distance medals in 2004 in the marathon. So we have gotton 3 Olympic distance medals since 1984.

He read Gerry's thread about US distance runners in the Olympics and took it to heart.

I can't believe you douche bags are on here calling Fam out for his efforts. Make the olympic team and then say what you want. maybe someday you will all break 4:20 for the mile.

this was his first time getting to the finals of a world level competition, i believe, and he pr'd to do it. i didn't see the race but going to the front with three laps to do in the olympic final is the kind of (self-destructive) action that makes american distance legends--bk, pre. the not-medaling is also part of that, unfortunately. my real question for fam is why he hasn't taken his 13:11 5k ability and gotten close to marsh and lincoln's ar's. he should go on the euro circuit after the olympics and try to get down closer to 8:08, which is probably his true ceiling.
