it's a bad idea to do it. there are companies that deal with that sort of stuff. wipe the hard drive thoroughly and sell it, maybe.

Technically it's against the law and you can be fined. You have to do a special hazardous waste disposal for them.
If you can't sell it, remove the hard drive and then turn it over to a hazardous material dump. If you sell it, clean the hard drive first if there is anything on there that you don't want others to see or have.
