Who will be the dark horse to medal in the womens and mens olympic marathon?
The field for both marathons is stacked with runners who have lots of wins at the major marathons. But I think conditions and tactical racing will make it possible for a dark horse to emerge and surprise the field with a medal finish. My picks:
Mens: Viktor Rothlin Gold. A medal finish may not be too big of a surprise considering the strong win in Tokyo, but I will go out on a limb and say that he could be a surprise gold medalists. His marathon performances are peaking at the right time and he battled the heat well in Osaka.
Womens: Madai Perez Bronze. Perez looked good at the NY half. She has run with the leaders in Boston and Chicago, but has yet to put together a good finish. She has the form and speed (2:22 pr) to medal. A weak performance in Osaka makes her a big long shot. But, I think she has the ability to surprise the field.
