Absolutely no difference in the times anoounced for Ben Rosario and Brian Sell on race day, Sunday October 12, 2003. It was explained at that time about the gun time/chip time. I was in the press room during the interviews with them.

Ben and Brian ran US Olympic Trials qualifying times. End of discussion.

It's interesting, in the very least, that it took over a month for the times to be corrected in the "official" results. Conspiracy theorist could easily say that someone lowered the times slightly on Oct. 12 but failed to cover his ass by getting the official results to change. Someone also apparently forgot to tell USATF either way. At any rate, I'd rather have more people qualifying for something like the marathon trials than less.

none of the other trials qualifiers times have changed on the chicago marathon website which leads me to believe that two seconds were cut off sell and rosario's times. i don't think it is a coincidence that those two guys were both off by two seconds and noone else was off.

I have no input on how results are posted/reported. So you are asking questions to the wrong person. I am just telling you that Ben and Brian's times - gun/chip - wre discussed at the press conference interview conducted by Toni Reavis on October 12, 2003. Brian and Ben both discussed their gun and chip times then.

O.K. then. One more "yes" or "no" question:

If I tell Tony Reavis in an interview that I ran 2:21:59, but the official results at Chicago indicate that my gun time was 2:22:01, do I have my qualifier?

If I were in charge of the Trials race, I would let you run based on that time, so yes. But I'm not, so who knows?

I think the interview was written up in the RW Online coverage, plus Chicago Amateur Athlete. I don't know the links. I'm just telling you that's what happened in the press room.

I can tell you that the USATF is being hard asses about times. So if you miss by a second they probably won't let you in. Just what I have heard. So they better get their second or two from the race side before it goes "official".

This is nuts. Heres my take:

Chip time is from when you cross the start line to when you cross the finish line. Right? It doesnt count when your in the 5th or 6th row trying to move up. So it seems as if Rosario and Sell ran Respective A and B times by the chip. The chip should be what theyre judging by, gun time is just stupid since your not actually at the "start line" per se when the gun goes off. But hey what do I know?

This is really troubling.

It's now been reported on another thread that Rosario's gun/official time has been "adjusted" from 2:22:01 to 2:21:59 based on some purported discrepancy. Does this mean that all those who ran Chicago can take 2 seconds off their gun/official time.

I'm surprised more out there aren't concerned about this. This guy ran a great race. Unfortunately, he missed the mark by one second. Why is he in, by not someone like Miles and Miles who missed the mark by 3 seconds. If the organizers at Chicago (who, incidentally, run a wonderful event) are complicit in this, I'm going to be pretty disappointed.

Make no mistake. If people are reporting a "gun" time of 2:21:59 for Rosario right now, that's different from the official results I saw the day after the race, the week after the race, two weeks after the race, and so on.

Someone from USATF or the Chicago Marathon should be called upon to answer this.

Problem is you get a "running start" when you go by chip time. If Chicago is giving out free A and B Standards I have a friend who ran 2:40, does anyone know who he can contact to be adjusted?

This is not the fault of the guys who ran. I would take whatever they gave me personally as well. Have an old coach who ran near sub 4 min. Official time was 4:00.0 but found someone with a sub 4 on his watch which he counts as his PR today. I would do the same thing... This is crazy though with electronic timing, either you run the time or you don't. I understand these things can get F'd up. Sometimes they don't get your splits or sometimes you even get someone else. Regardless you don't mess with one or two person's results after you do it for everyone...in which case everyone?s time would be different. Were the Hanson?s guys on the starting line like miles and miles? Did someone pull strings? So now you don't have to take EPO or cut to cheat, you can just get the management to bluff your time...haha.
