It seems like Dobson has had some real flat efforts lately after peaking for the trials, and I'm wondering if he knew he was cooked and not just "training through" if he could relinquish his spot to Solinksy because it's the right thing to do? Would that even be allowable?

Aside from the fact that that would never, ever happen, Bolota Asmerom might not be too happy about it.

Well with solid performances of 3:53 and 8:00 in his last couple races, Ian looks to be rounding nicely into mid 13:30s fitness. If he can manage to hold that peak until Beijing he'll be bloody hard to beat.

Surrendering a spot to Solinsky or to Asmerom or to anyone else is not the "right thing to do" for Ian Dobson. He qualified for the U.S. team and earned the right to compete in Beijing.

Okay, what's next?

GETTING DEAD LAST IN THE PRELIMS AND COMMITTING SUICIDE.

It looks like Dobson is toast. Not being able to handle the hot 3k pace = peaked out, obviously. This is downside to the trials process. It sux that trials process has to be this way. I believe that athletes should have a qualifying period, say, 4-5 weeks leading up to the Olympics inwhich the top ranked performances should be the athletes who go thru the rounds and make the final. This would ensure that the most deserving athletes would compete in each event. Isn't the Olympics a world competition anyways??? I mean its the Olympics, it should be the purest and most absolute of all competitions.

It's also quite conceivable that when the Olympic 5000 comes up in Beijing, Dobson will be ready.

You never know about these things. I remember that when John Kagwe won the 1997 NYC Marathon, he'd won just about every race he'd been in leading up to that. When he won in NYC in 1998, he'd sucked in just about everything in '98. You never know.

Dobson is a good runner with a good coach. He looked awesome at the trials and for him to be running such bad marks now means he's either injured or training through it with the bigger picture in mind. You don't just come off a peak like that and dive bomb. If solinski deserved to be on that team hed be on it. He isn't on it.he doesn't deserve to be there. Racing is about getting the job done on the day. Dobson got it done
