Obviously the mile is slightly longer. What other subtle nuances and differences are there between these two events?

one starts on the 300m mark so you start on a straightaway and the mile (for all intents) starts on a curve
Psychologically, I feel the 100m+ difference makes all the difference. I always raced the 1500m as a 1200 and change. My miles were all run with regard to even paces. So in one race I had no problem charging out for the first half, while in the other I held back a bit. Of course, thats just me. Note: It did not make too much of a difference in the end since my PRs were roughly equivalent.
Side note: what are the slight nuances between the OP's first 1500m vs. mile post and his second?

How about: one is measured in meters and one isnt.
the mile is not run at the olympics or WC's
Oh...and there is no "Fifth Avenue 1500m"

That's gotta be the big one.
I always thought it was a little weird getting splits at the 100 meter mark instead of the 400 meter mark

wow. obviously you run a lot of 1700's dipshit.
The mile is just special... it's uniquely American and that is why I love it. To me the 1500 seems more like the 800 than the mile.
And as for the 1600.... bleh.
This thread is going really well! Let's keep it going folks. One of the best threads of letsrun this year!

Can you explain that further?
i'd rather run a 1500m anyday than a mile. my best 1500m time= 4:18, my best mile time, 4:44, an im pretty sure i ran that mile time 2 weeks after i ran that 1500m time. f*** the mile.
