Taking my H.S team camping for five days.
What do you do to keep busy?
RUN
Have a daily detailed schedule of everything you are going to do starting with breakfast and ending with lights off. Schedule talks and discussions on nutrition, race strategy, running in college, choosing shoes, running safety, hydration, cross training, training in the off season, etc. 2 workouts a day beginning with the purpose of the workout, warmup, drills, and ending with strides, cool down, stretches, snack. Schedule in games or tournaments such as cards, frisbee, volleyball. Put different groups in charge of cooking and cleanup. Bring a couple of running movies if possible. Invite guest speakers - other coaches or runners who have good advice, stories, or experiences to share.
Most important - keep them busy, superised and ready to sleep at night. And look for trouble - they are probably planning things that you or I would never have thought of.
Two words illegal fireworks... that will keep em busy...
Do you mean camping as in actual camping in the wild in a tent or just a camp at a college or similar?
Besides runs in the morning and evening...
Talk to each kid individually to see what they want to achieve for the year. Make them write it down and make them understand to achieve those goals they will have to work hard.
Do group actitivies that build interaction among the group each day. Whether it is assign groups for clean up or cooking or whatever. Switch up the groups up so kids don't only hang out with the same group the entire time.
Build team spirit - Remind the kids that it isn't about who is the fastest. It is about doing the best they can given their ablility. They are on a team and they should support all the runners on their team to do their best.
Get John Wooden's pyramid and go over those topics.
Get groups to do a skit/talent show the last night.
a good sample schedule:
8am: get up, stretch, and run 3-4 miles on trails (short run of the day)
9:15am- breakfast
10am- discussion on nutrition,x-training, stretching, injury prevention, etc...
11am- Drills, Strength exercises, plyos, bounding, strides
I think this would be a great additon to a camp schedule since a lot of kids neglect these during the summer.
I would do something like a circuit of different stations alternating after every minute or so (whenever you blow a whistle)
sample stations: burpees, push ups, crunches, backwards running, bicycles, high knees, butt kicks, jump rope, body weight squats dips on an bench, sit ups, skipping, and jumping.
after the circuit, have everyone do 10 100m strides as a team.
12:30- lunch
1:30-2:45pm- rest
2:45pm- Game time (bring some scrabble, monopoly, checkers, chess, etc.. w/ somem usic)
4pm- 2nd run (longer run of 6-12 miles depending on the kid)
6:30- dinner
7:30- movie time
10 pm- everybody get ready for sleep
hope this helps!!!!
We ran twice a day at camp. Lots of guest speakers. Free time was spent trying to have sex or get some action from the hotties at camp. The camp I went to was a week long visit near the ocean.
We put grain alcohol in the gatorade and played spin the bottle then had circle jerks, daisy chains, and the camp director passed out strings of beads while we paired up for "relays".
