3. kosgei 731
4. songok 732
5. soi 735
mottram has been doing extensive interval training for his 5k in beijeng, and this is an underdistance for him. it will seem short for him and easy to complete. he has great kick can manage well under sub 60sec per lap.
chebii has has the most imoressive kick in the group as he showed us at the adidas classic 07. he needs to work on the middle of his race, laps 4 and 5 are where mottram will prevail. he'll still manage to get 2nd. also an underdistance for him. probably using this as his last workout before beijeng.
kosgei has been training is the ngong hills ever since his eligibility has been up for u.s. collegiate track. still not sure why we let him compete in the americas. im glad he is representing kenya instead of the united states like lagat. kosgei is a true kenyan citizen, not a traitor.
the ngong hills have helped several athletes achieve world class status, including the robert cheriyot and the world greatest runner, Paul Tergat. kosgei hasnt been on the elite scene long enough to outrun people like mottram, but all those american college xc titles (which should have been kenyan xc titles) have really helped his confidence knowing that he can be a champion. the hill have really strengthened his calves, and racing on a flat surface such as a track will enable him to get 3rd place. this guy has 2012 written all over him.
songok is the veteran of the group. hes still pretty young, but hes been on the elite level for a few years now. he has the experience and knowledge to know what the pace is going to be like. hes a 1500 specialist, he might not have the endurance that it takes to get top 3 in this race. even in xc, he preferred the short course over the long course. if he keeps up these overdistances, he could have a great shot at breaking el g's 2000meter world record. but he needs to do it within the next few seasons before he peaks. hes from the same village as the african lagat; personally i think he's 2x the runner lagat is. this is a great training race for him, and great preparation for his olympic and long term development as a miler. id love to see him proove me wrong, i just dont think that will happen. 4th place for him.
edwin soi is an african runner with an asian name. he has the greatest range in the whole field, hes already won several 10k road races this year. has decent pr's, but i think he should have done a few more underdistances if hes expecting to get top 3 in this race. like a few of the other olypians in the field, hes also using this race as a blowout workout for the olympics. i only hope he focuses on his own game and his own goals, and doesnt blow them all away by going out at sub 60 pace. he needs to be running 61's, even pace, and continue to develope his human pace calculator like the great ones have already done. running is all about pace. life is all about pace.
dont run too fast. dont live life too fast. you need to take time to stop and smell the the seaweed every now and then. i wish him the best as he takes top 5, but i mainly hope this young man keeps his head on his shoulders and gets to enjoy the thrills of being a track champion just like he was on the road.
i wish all competitors well, and that they put on a show for the semi-elites such as myself. run well. win well.
live your life to the fullest.
