I would argue that men CHOOSE (not GET) the better deal: men CHOOSE to be lobstermen, crab fishermen, roustabouts, oil derrick workers, steel workers, etc. etc. Women, being smarter, drive up to the steel mill and say "Thelma, you are NUTS! I am OUTTA here!"
So don't get me going on any gender-wage gap discrepancy...
Supply. Demand. More folks (women) vying for office jobs = wages down; fewer skilled folks in high-demand nastiness (e.g., wildcat oil) = wages up.
So: perhaps the observation that women seem more studious in college indeed reflects their understanding of having to compete more fiercely to get the cushy office job...
Funny thing is: women going into "traditionally male" professions often make more $$$. Women in tech are highly coveted, for example. Women in law are actively recruited as well. Women increasing OWN financial services...
