Am planning on doing this race. Have been accepted as an elite racer based on my decent showings at national/regional level cycling races.
That being said, I've never done one of these before. It's very difficult to get any info by using google, so alas, I present my questions here!
I'm not able to access any tall building to practice in where I live. So, the main questions are...
1. Use the railing or not? At the gym, on the stepmill, which has an 8" step, I can hold 160 steps a minute for 1500 steps without touching the railing. I feel like I die a thousand deaths doing this, but it's an awesome test. As the pace increases above 140 steps per minute I'm finding that the motion of the arms starts to quickly resemble running. It seems like using the railing during the race would mess up one's form once you are at that threshold of 140+ steps per minute. Up at 160 steps it just doesn't seem realistic to put one arm down and not the other.
2. Multiple steps at a time? 1000' in 1500 steps is right at 8" per step. Given that I can max my aerobic system out at doing single steps, it just doesn't seem possible people would bound up two steps at a time. It seems like you would go anaerobic too quickly. What are the top tower runners doing when the steps are about 8"?
From what I can tell, this seems to be the best cyclist vs. runner type event where neither athlete is truly doing their specialty.
