Is it true that Lebanon high school didn't even have a track while Virgin was in high school? Apparently did his speed work on a baseball field?
Concerning workouts, Marc Bloom writes the following:
After college, Virgin trained himself in preparation for the World CC Championships. As a foundation for his two victories he did 2-3 hard workouts per week -- a ten miler on the roads in which he ran 2 easy miles, 6 miles of fartlek (surges of 200-1200 meters) and then 2 easy miles. Another was 12x440 uphill, going from 78 seconds down to 68 seconds. Long run of 15 or more miles. On recovery days, 4 easy most mornings and 10 easy in the afternoon.
Closer to the event, tried to simulate competition with sets of 600s coming through the quarter in 63 and closing in 27. In March of 1981 before workd's, his last workout was 12x400 on the track in 57.5 seconds.
Also was known for giving Miruts Yifter the nickname "Yifter the Shifter."
Guy was also an avid Disco junky...Malmo, does that hit close to home...I'll bet you were a Disco junky at some point, eh???
