The women's 3,000 meter steeplechase has all kinds of subplots tonight... Galavitz set the American record last year, but hasn't come close since. Barringer is the fastest this year with her 9:29.9. Willard has the best open 800m and 1,500m times. Anderson is very steady and holds a nice even pace. Willard made excuses last year after Barringer nipped her for the US Championship. Barringer is very tough as evidenced by her two NCAA cross country runner-up finishes (1st American). Galavitz has a great kick but tends to hang back too much. Willard was very perturbed that Barringer was excited and raised her arms after winning her heat.
Here's what I see happening... Barringer likes to get out of traffic after hacing her shoe stepped on at the 2007 NCAA Championship. Also, a fast pace could narrow the field and ensure a top three finish. The leaders should be on American record pace. Galavitz and Anderson will have to decide whether or not to go with Barringer and Willard whenever the break is made. If they stay up front, it could cost them both. Meanwhile, Willard needs to concentrate on making the team rather than winning. If Barringer sets a fast pace and Willard falls into the trap because of her apparent need to not just make the team but to beat Barringer, she could do her own fade. If so, Galavitz and Anderson could both pass a faltering Willard.
Barringer is way too tough and strong to wilt. She will make the team, should win and may push the American record under 9:25. Second should be Willard around 9:30 with Galavitz third around 9:33. Anderson looks to be fourth around 9:35. However, if Willard expends her energy, look for Galavitz to blow by her with her great kick and watch out for a steady finish from Anderson.
I did a story on Jenny Barringer after her first NCAA win in 2006 for Florida Running and Triathlon that also included some cool info from a telephone conversation after her victory. Check
