Wariner wont break 400WR

If he goes under 20s for 200m then I reckon he has a chance.

So, as of now he is a one-time gold medal winner who sort of had a sniff at a world record. WOW! That's a short list. You're right: that makes him as much of a household name as Alonzo Babers!

I know this is opening up a topic that has been discussed ad nauseum, but after watching Wariner's easy 44.6 the other day I have concluded that: i) he remains the best in the world at the 400; and ii) he is the US' best 800 meter runner.

While not his best event - hard to make a case for that given his 400 meter prowess - he could easily run a great 800 runner if he chose to. He is very efficient, is angular and thin without much bulk (much more so than many other 400 meter runners) and yet he is strong and thus could, with some practice, "float" as is required through parts of any virtually top flight 800 race, and his 200 meter speed is such a significant advantage. While not ready to state he could challenge the likes of a Kaki this year - who is strikingly efficient and contained for a runner so young - Wariner could clearly spin a very fast 800 - I think sub 1:44 without much additional experience. Of course, from his perspective, he likely sees no reason to do so - but it would be great for us armchair fans.

Wariner gets way more pub than most ever did. He most likely will win his 2nd Oly 400m gold and 2nd WC gold. He'll be remembered. He's an outlier, the great white hope, dont forget to include that in his pop cred.

Isnt Wariner still about 23, hes got loads more years to improve. What was MJ running at that age and how old was MJ when he broke the record?

Wariner has already ran 43.45 at Osaka and it wasnt perfect conditions at all, it was the worse conditions out of any of the nights tbh.

Hes Olympic champ and 2x world champ in the individual 400m. Id like Wariner to run sub 20 because he'd destroy the record.

Quick question what did Butch run for the 200 and what did he run for the 400.

The big question should be, why didnt MJ totally put the 400m WR out of reach of any other 400m runner for years and years.

Do people think Merritt can break his record aswell since hes sub 20?

I'm afraid his 200m speed is his biggest disadvantage for running the 800m. In training to run 20's and 43's, he guarantees himself blowing up before 800m.

He'll be about as well remembered as Felix Sanchez or Ana Guevara if he doesn't break the record.

And OP, Wariner could either be a 20.0/43.3/1:50 guy or a 21.0/45.0/1:46 guy. The 8 is not his event.
