Is it just me, or are road races getting exponentially more expensive, much more than the rate of inflation? Some 5Ks in my area are now charging $25. One half marathon charged $45! It seems that the days of the $10 race are gone. Some smaller club races are still in that range...therefore these are the races I often frequent.
It may come as no surprise that I blame the Galloway/Penguin effect for rising race costs. In a time not all that long ago, all we runners wanted was an accurate course, some water at the finish, and a little trophy to the winner. Now, a race has to have custom made t-shirts, bands along the course, a gormet meal at the finish line, finishers medals, a post race party, timing chips, goody bags, ect. ect. When races became parties, they started charging us all more to pay for it. A race now has to be an "event."
Let's bring back racing and save the parties for Saturday night.
