If there were a bunch of guys that could run 8:20 pace maybe he could run 8:25

What is equivalent 3000 time to 8:25 - 7:50?
What was the weather like when he broke the record? Usually really hot in NC this time of year. In perfect conditions I could see another 8to10 seconds coming off of that time
8:34

It seemed to be windy more than anything.
He could break 8:30 with competition. I don't think you go THAT much faster with competition.
maybe 5-6 seconds faster with someone to follow and break the wind for him

8:20 is not world class unless it's a tactical race. And who cares? He'll be running 5ks with the best in the US next year and we'll see how he stacks up
Possibly slower. People often overestimate how much faster a person would be "with competition." Some people run their absolute fastest when they are relaxed, in the zone and not thinking about what other runners are doing.
It depends on how discouraged he got seeing that many people off in the distance.
9:32. he doesn't have what it takes.
i think an athlete runs faster with SLIGHTLY better runners than himself, my guess is he could run about 8:25- 8:28 with runnera little better than him pulling him along, however if he ran against world class 3k-5k runners he would be to far behind, so it would be like he is running by himself, ncaa competition will be good development for him, to get him to world class in a few years.

Or he would try to go with them on bomb on the 7th lap.

Yeah I agree with this. Like last xc season when he ran that ridiculous course record at the california state meet, but got beat by a large margin at nationals. I think he's the kind of runner who can run very well by himself. That's not to say he can't run equally well with a lot of competition, I just don't see him dropping that much time.
