He just ran 3:37 in Vancouver.

I would say that if he gets in, and makes the final, he has a shot. He seems to have "momentum" now....

Not an American, so I don't know the rules, but it would certainly seem shameful if people weren't able to upgrade their seeding times up until about now. Robison looked very good in both Victoria and the Jerome. You know, sort of like a guy peaking just about right for the Trials.

Thanks, but I am just fine in Canada, and it was great watching Grant run so well, twice in the last 3 days. As I said, I don't know the USA rules, but he "should" be in the Trials. Especially considering that many who are in the Trials with Standards made "who knows when", aren't in his league right now. However, that's up to you Yanks :)

Considering he can hit the 'A' standard after the trials, and if he places well at the trials, he can still be on the Olympic team. Whats the difference?
new rule this year is that you have to hit the A standard either at the trials or prior to it to make the u.s. olympic team. so, let's say that robison had run an A olympic standard just now, he were allowed the trials entry based on the 3:40, and he was top 3 at the trials in 3:38. Then the A qualifier at Jerome would get him into the olympics, but it didn't help him get into the trials. all this stuff is nonsense. let them run their A qualifiers for the olympics any time before the olympics and let them run their trials auto qualifiers any time before the trials.

Nice idea in theory, but how much time do you think it takes the USOC to work through Chinese bureaucracy to get everyone appropriate visas and the like. There's probably a good reason they want to have a list of who will be going to Beijing sometime before the one day left point.

Right now, if 3 or more guys with "A" standards make the OT 1500m final they will basically go to the Olympics in the order they finish. So Robison would have to be, not only in front of those guys, but under the "A" standard at the OT.
No qualifying period after the OTs at all.
However....since there are those arguing that he should be allowed in even though he has not qualified under the rules set forth, I suppose those same idiots will argue that he should be allowed to go to the OG simply because he "should".
I called grant robison out for running poorly and I just want to say that this is a very impressive result!
I think he'll get in. Vin, if he wants, can pull his weight to get a former athlete into the meet. In 2001, Ryan Hall ran 3:42.70, a few months before departing for Stanford. The standard was backed off from 3:41.80 to 3:42.70.
I have less problem with Robison running in the trials than a 3:40-3:41 qualifier from last year, with a SB of 3:44 or slower. Those guys tend to be fodder at National Meets--I've been that guy before.
Rules are rules, but the intent should be to have the best runners on the track. I think any reasonable person can understand this. If, worst case, they have to add an extra person to the overall field, is it that big of a deal?

The Olympic A standard is 3:36.60. I think the top 3 at the OTs will hit this, it's not that difficult given the depth of the current field.
Last year, Lagat was 3rd in 3:35.55.
The irony in all of this is that Robison made the Olympic team in '04 based off his performances the summer before as not many guys had the "A" standard. He didn't have a good trials or olympic games.
I don't remember how that all went down with Lunn, Gruber, and Myers, but I do remember Grant not making the finals of the OTs and making the olympic team.

I agree though and feel bad for Grant. At least we have a strong team that he probably wouldn't make anyway. I'd feel worse if we were still in the Gabe Stember Pyrah era.
The desired field size is a minimum of 30. this info is taken directly from the USATF website. His seed time puts in the top 30 i'd assume, but i didn't count.
"A" and "B" Standards
"A" - athletes who attain the "A" standard will automatically be included in the event, provided they enter and declare. *
"B" - athletes who attain the "B" standard will be included in the event only if additional competitors are needed to make the event competitive (i.e., not enough athletes have attained the "A" standard). *
* - subject to the Qualifying Guidelines, entry process, and declaration process. If the "B" standard is used, only the number of athletes needed to make the event competitive will be included. These athletes must declare, and they may be invited for inclusion only after the close of declarations.
The field sizes listed are the desired minimum of participants, and the Games Committee will try to fill the field to the minimum provided there are enough athletes entered and qualified without the quality of competition being affected. The Men's and Women's Track & Field Chairs may alter the field size as necessary.
