That's actually not a bad race at all for Rupp. Converts to 4:01.13 for the mile, which is a PR.
I'm thinking he's close to ten times at the 4:00-4:02/3:42-3:44 range without going under, since high school. It's getting kind of embarassing.

Rupp ranks #7 on the U.S. 10000m list. Of the six gentlemen ahead of him, none has a sub-4 credential. And all had (or are having) careers I wouldn't exactly consider embarrassing.

Sully was asked to pace for 1200m. Did all the work, then see how he feels. Ran 800m two days before, planned efforts.
There were 2 pacemakers, they did a great job and the weather was perfect. Ryan Mackenzie went through 800 in 1:53 point, and then Sully took the next lap through 1200, and then everybody was racing. Big PB for Milne and several others in the field too. Great rabbiting by Ryan and Kevin helped out enormously.
That's fine, but I've never seen a 10K guy hammer away at the 1500 like that (how many have Meb, Abdi and Ritz done *collectively*, a half-dozen???) and not be able to improve much more than a second from his HS best.OTOH Ryan Hall at Stanford seemed to have the same issue- reach a near 4:00 standard in HS, then reach an impenetrable wall on improvement in that event, despite massive gains at longer stuff. It's like they have maxed out their biological potential on the fast-twitch end within a few years, yet continue to progress, endurance-wise. Fascinating.

Gawd, some of you guys like to devour your young. Rupp was just fine today - obviously a 1:56/7 first 800 was fast for him, and he just gutted out the last lap. That's the last lap of 3.75, not 25! Obviously, if someone lays down a 1:56 in the middle of the 10K., he'll be in trouble....maybe at 2:04ish, not so much.
Huge PB by Graeme Wells and Geoff Martinson as well, both are going to Canadian Nationals in Windsor, Ont. in July. Both just outside of Canadian B standard though (3:39.00) but Milne hits A+ (3:36.00) and a nice run by Grant Robison as well, although no one had an answer for Milne's kick from 200 in. He powered away from the field with ease!
I believe Benninger, Brannen, Wells, Martinson or any other Canadian who doesn't have A+ will have to run 3:36.60 minimum at Canadian Nationals on July 6th or before to have a shot at going to the Olympics this time around
Amazing run for Milne, the guy started the year with a PR of 3:41.6. A huge credit to him and his coach Dave Scott-Thomas who is building an incredible group in Guelph.
