A few weeks ago I stumbled upon this article and it talked about how unless a silent gun the athletes in lane 1 have a huge advantage:

It also said how a silent gun wasn't used at the Olympics. I kind of assumed that in today's age they used a silent gun everywhere. But then at NCAAs I was talking to the Finishlynx people and they said it's not used. In today's age where we try and separate finishes to the 1/1000th I was shocked that they totally are willing to disadvantage athletes .05 in events where that can be the difference between gold and also ran.

which points out the obvious that those close to the starter have an advantage without a "silent" gun.
So the question is at will they use a silent gun in the Olympics? Where else do they use a silent gun? Golden league? etc?
