Carrying cell phone while running advice

I have a BlackBerry 8130 which I carry on almost every run. I've been carrying a phone for years. Some have been better than others to carry, but I don't mind my BB too much.

get one of those cool backpack phones with the cord like they had in 'nam.

There are shorts that have the large pockets in the back for carrying gels and such (sorry just cannot recall the brands). If the phone is small enough it will fit back there just fine--doubt a Blackberry will.

I tried running with a cell phone on the clip once (I was sort of on call), and the clip chaffed me and also had a tendency to pull down my shorts (it was an older, bulky cell).

I have to as well and run with my blackberry in my hand(in a a soft ipod case). I'm on call 24/7 every other week and have 30 minutes to get to a computer if one of my servers goes down.

I use an Iphone for everyday use but I find it too heavy/awkward to carry on runs. So, I just swap out the SIM card and put it into a Motorola Razor for my long runs. I like the shorts from Race Ready. They have a velcro-close side pocket that fits the Razor perfectly so it doesn't bounce around. I'm a chick though so I don't know if the Race Ready shorts are too girlie for the guys . . .

Why don't you just hold the phone in your hand?

Some days I run to or from work. I take one of those plastic bags that newspapers are delivered in and put inside some cash, a credit card, driver's license, cell phone, and my glasses, and carry it in my hand while I run. Maybe that would get too tiring over a long run, but it is easy for my 7 or 8 mile run.

(1) Wife is due any moment(2) Some people have important jobs and are on call at all times. At times I am oncall for the full week and have to have a phone with me at all times or risk losing my job if I do not respond in time.(3) Some people have health issues and would rather attempt to keep exercising carrying a phone in case of emergency rather than not exercise at all.Remember, once you graduate college you end up with a lot more responsibilities other than running.

I have the amphipod as well and use it when I run to work 3-4 times a week. It works well for me. Don't carry my cell phone in it (just a couple of dollars and my work access card), but I'm sure you could. Doesn't pull my shorts down at all. Only problem is that the mesh absorbs sweat/water easily (although it does dry quickly).

I was at a conference a month ago, and not knowing the area, I just carried my cell phone in my hand just in case I needed to call for a ride and for emergency use. If your phone is small enough, you should be able to carry it easily. You might be able to find some kind of armband phone carrier as well, just hit the local stores and ask for one.

Actually, a friend of mine is a welding engineer for Ashland Chemical, and he's on call 24/7 for a week. If there is an accident and/or a major spill he has to be reachable immediately, for obvious reasons, so he's always got a cell phone during those weeks, even when he exercises.

Also, in other news, grow up.

Thanks for the good ideas. I know I shouldn't get caught in the middle school trash talk trap but there are many reasons someone has to run with a phone. Some have already been mentioned. My gym has free babysitting while you work out in the building but if you leave the buiding to run you must have a phone.

I have the BlackBerry Pearl, it fits in the key pocket of most of my shorts.

I carry one sometimes but I don't like them bouncing up and down in my pocket. I don't use one of the nerd carries but I put it in my pocket then tuck under the waist elastic of my shorts.

If Im running in running shorts with under wear lining, I don't bring it.

The world is coming to an end and only this one welding engineer knows what to do, only he can save us, "for obvious reasons".

Ashland Chemical, a Fortune 500, billion dollar corporation that's been around for over 80 years and they are dependent on getting this guy on a telephone call and having him talk us down or tell us what to do over the phone.

Let's just say they have a chain of command in place before he ever started working there and a Plan B, C & D.
