I think with a year of practice that I could be one of the best players in the WNBA.

Of course! Even the most incompetent male could dominate the WNBA.

How do you think you'd do racing the top women in the world in the 100, 200 and 400?
I'd be right there with Allyson and Sanya in the 400m. If I focused on the 400m exclusively I could beat them.
If you have any basketball skills and are not 5'2", I'd say you'd be on your way to stardom. Have you considered a sex change?
I was hoping Affirmative Action would get me in.
no offense to womens sports, but the WNBA is the worst of all.
It is 100% unwatchable as a sport, not even because it's all female. Just that they miss about every shot they take.
I watched for 15 minutes once and it was miss, rebound, dribble, miss, rebound, dribble.... for the entire time. I think 8 points were scored in that time period. It's an awful sport. I can watch other womens sports, just not the WNBA.
there is no sure way of knowing, but wouldnt the top wnba players be about the same as the top women runners? would being as good or better than the top wnba players be the same as a 2:15 marathon or a 14:10 5k runner?, yes lots of men can do it, but they would have to train pretty hard.
First of all....
The reason you think that the WNBA is lesser than say, the NBA, is because they play differently. They play more like college players; they set up actual plays. In my opinion, the NBA is hard to watch because it's not an actual game. There is no defense; it's simply each man fastbreaking over and over again.
Second....
I highly doubt that any of you could beat the women in the WNBA at basketball. You realize that they're practicing every single day, and that their skills are much better than you'd like to think yours are. Additionally, you wouldn't be better than them simply because of a size advantage; most of them are quite a bit bigger than your average long distance running guy.
I concur with the above poster. The bashing of the WNBA is a bit silly, given how much the NBA totally blows now. The NBA is reaping what it has sown. These controversies over foul calls wouldn't even be happening if, gradually over time, the NBA hadn't allowed greater and greater physical contact as a matter of course.
As it happens, I don't find the WNBA particularly amusing and I do see a lot of bad play. I just think it's a matter of a lack of depth. There are certainly some great players - Cynthia Cooper was brilliant, Sheryl Swoppes still is, and there are younger ones now. But there may only be enough to fill about four teams. That will change over time.
All I have to say is that SI ran an article a while back about the University of Tennessee women's team- they would scrimmage a bunch of dudes on campus that had basically no basketball pedigree. Tennessee was the best team in the country, and even the women on the team admitted that these random dudes would be one of the best teams in the SEC.
I was on the men's scrimmage team against a middle of the road DI womens team (2nd round of the tourney, two first round losses). Of the 7 guys on the team, only 3 were HS starters. None were stars. We had five guys in the 5'8-5'10 range. A six footer, and me at 6'2. They were much bigger.
The scores weren't close...ever. We usually tried to replicate what they would see in their next game. The time their opponent had a big girl who would step out and shoot threes, that's all I did. In one 20 minute half, I probably made10-12 threes, missing only a handful. The ball being 1 1/2 inches smaller (and lighter) makes a huge difference once you get used to it.
Some sports the difference between men and women (golf for example) isn't so big. I think basketball maginifies the difference. I also think men are deeper and more competitive at most sports.
Could I play in the NBA? No. But I'm 58, have a messed up foot, and am only 5-11. So don't count on me.
Pretty sure I could take most of them in 1v1. At 6'3", 190 I wouldn't have much trouble backing them down, and they better shoot lights out cause I'm quicker, stronger, and got more ups than they do.
I maintain that without the NBA's continuous financial backing since the league started that there would be no WNBA today. One of the the posters above said it correctly, that there is probably enough good players to fill 4 to 5 teams ONLY.
The attendance figures that the WNBA uses are an absolute joke. They still count total tickets distributed as there attendance figures for the night. I have no problem with counting the season ticket holders as attendance, but when you count giving away 6,000 tickets to local schools, churches and organizations as attendance, that is a joke.
I remember when I was interning for the Washington Wizards (they still owned the WNBA team at that time) that there would be nights when we would call the attendance 9,000 (Keep in mind Verizon Center holds almost 20K) and there would probably be 3,000 people there.
But, on the original topic, No, I could not play in the WNBA...Nor would I want to. I don't enjoy basketball, I can't shoot, I hate wearing ridiculously long shorts and high tops
I'm sure that there are many, many men who could play in the WNBA and pretty much every college player would dominate the women. However, I think part of the reason we think the WNBA players are weak is because we are comparing watching the WNBA on TV to watching the NBA on TV. The WNBA looks really slow by comparison. But the players in the WNBA are much better than you think they are. I suggest you video tape your next pick-up game, you'll see that most of you look pretty shitty as well, much worse than you expect to look.
From my experience, the best 8 guys at your local college rec center would win the WNBA championship. It's not even a question if those guys had a few months to get in shape. They would run a full court press and focus on playing lock down defense. The women would shoot less than 20%. However, the stereotypical letsrunner, and uncoordinated skinny guy who didn't play in HS, would not cut it.
I'd say most guys who were good at any level in HS could play in the WNBA. I have played against several all-conference (BCS conferences) level women's players in pickup games. They were never more skilled than good men and were completely average players when playing among the local gym heroes.
Two of my friends in college played on the men's scrimmage squad for a final four team with a current WNBA player that is featured in promos during NBA games. These guys were a bit above average at best. They were both positive the scrimmage squad would've easily beaten the women's team in a real game.
It's not valid to compare the merits of great female runners and WNBA players relative to men. Allyson Felix is 5'6" and 125 lb. Paula Radcliffe is 5'8" and 120 lb. They are very, very fast but also very tiny, and that counts in basketball. Even great collegiate women's players lack the lateral quickness, power, first step or jumping ability to compete with guys of equal size. By and large, women that have the size and strength to excel at basketball are not quick and do not jump high compared to an athletic male. Have you ever seen a 6'2" woman dunk? Even without great basketball skills, an athletic man of average size would be an absolute force on defense in the WNBA.
No, I'm a dude and I thought that you were, too.

Most guys would probably do pretty well, all you really need is 11.0/49/1:55 speed and you're right there.
Nice argument though.
Yet another "WE HATE WOMEN" thread. What to f*ck is with this? Are you all homos or impotent or just a bunch of little girly boys who can't make it with women.?
What a pathetic bunch of losers. Well, you can't run with the Africans either and the girls don't want you so where does that leave you?
