You're aware that automatic timing was first used as a demonstration (and backup) in the 1932 Olympics, right ?

Hayes was clocked in 9.91 auto & wind-aided in the semi-final of the 1964 Games. At the least, Jim Hines was timed electrically in 9.95 in Mexico City for the gold medal, at altitude but with legal wind.

Why is it so strange to think that a guy could run faster today than a guy from more than 40 years ago?

There's nothing strange about it, but they ran virtually identical times.

Automatic timing accurate to the hundredth of a second was used at Olympics starting in 1932. But for official RECORDS, times were rounded to the nearest tenth of second. It wasn't till 1976 that RECORDS were accepted to the hundredth of a second. Hayes' time in the 100m in Tokyo was 10.06.

So regardless, as far as times are concerned Trindon has the fastest time ever recorded for a college football player. Unfortunately in the record books you can't put asterisks next to times saying the track wasn't in its best shape.

I wasn't the original poster. All I said is that his nickname is "Bullet" Bob Hayes, not "Rocket" Bob Hayes. I should know - I've run in his meet in Jacksonville.

Lets see him run his time on a dirt track lane 1 which is chewed up by other races. Bob Hayes was an exceptional reciever for the Cowboys whose speed largely had a lot to do with changes in pass coverage to zone defenses because no one could cover him man to man.

He was only a sophomore on a STACKED team. He'll get a lot more playing time this year.
