What explains the greater popularity of watching horses race compared to watching humans race? Granted there are only three events a year that anyone cares about, but they certainly get more attention than Boston, NY, and Chicago marathons. Any thoughts on this phenomenon?
Because money.
No-one cares how fast a horse can run. Horse racing is just a vehicle for gambling.

Gambling is generally only allowed on animals (dogs racing, horse racing) because we assume that animals aren't corrupt. A greyhound doesn't make deals on the side to tank a race in which he is an overwhelming favorite. Humans do.

Yes.
Horse racing is also more popular than baseball, football, hockey and basketball.
It's one event that lasts 2 minutes.
Humans should only run the 800.
Or run an 800, 1000 and 1500 over 5 weeks.
These track meets have two hours of coverage and still cannot show all of the events.
And the top guys are not always racing each other.
Although that Pre 2 mile race was a great exception.

People think they're enjoying some kind of quasi-pastoral aristocratic lifestyle by hanging around the horse track wearing floppy hats and drinking mint juleps.

Football? I do not think so. Now if you are talking about the sport that Europeans call "football" then yes. But if you are talking American football, no sport in the US is even close to the NFL.

hockey yes, but running is also more popular than hockey
gambling is legal off site anyway (ike in britain). just make it legal on site and people will love running all of a sudden.
