I read the article and I agree with the guy who started this thread. How is Ritz in the race?

You assume, among other things, that the rule is that for those who have met the "B" standard that they will be chosen in order of their qualifying times, but the rule does not state that. Agreed, how is he lining up in the 10K?

did any of you read the post by Regulae? they don't have to take those with the B standard in order of the time that they have run. They simply have to fill the minimum number of athletes and to make the race competitive. Ritz will make the race competitive, guaranteed. He will be in the field and my money is on him getting top three.

I think you're confusing the Olympic Games "A" and "B" standards and the US Olympic Trials "A" and "B" standards, the latter of which is the focus of this thread. And on that matter, it seems more than likely that all "B" qualifiers who declare will be invited to run.

Does anyone know if Seth Summerside will be at the trials to compete? I haven't seen any results out of him this spring. Post info if you know it.

How many participants are expected to be selected in distance events with semis... steeple, 5000?

wouldn't his 2:11 marathon get him in the 10k?

A couple of clarifications:

--Not all of the people with faster times than Ritz's 28:28 have entered yet. If you look at any list (like Track and Field News) with times from 2007 and 2008, Ritz's mark is something like 32nd. Entries do not close until the end of next week. A lot of agents just haven't gotten to entering yet.

--Since the 10k is after the 5k, you would expect most of the 5k guys who also have a mark in the 10k to declare -- one last race....

--I can not recall a time EVER, in ANY EVENT where a slower time with a B standard leap-frogged over a faster B standard mark into the field. NEVER. There have been years where the meet director wanted to let in some high profile person, so they expanded the field size to take extra people down to the person they wanted to let in. Last year, Chaplin tried to leap-frog people in the men's 5k, letting in one guy who ran at World XC (and didn't have time to chase a mark) and one other athlete whose coach is a personal friend. People were PISSED and it went all the way to Masback who told Chaplin he had to let in the people who were skipped. In total, I don't think he will be specially selected to compete, where others in front of him are excluded.

--Someone posted that everyone with the B standard will be let in. No way. Although I haven't looked at the lists, there has to be something like 50 people with the B standard in the 10k.

Why doesn't Ritz just run the 10k at Prefontaine this weekend to lock up his spot in the trials if he's so concerned about it? Sub-28:00 should be no problem for him.

College Prof, how big would you expect the fields to be in distance events with semifinal heats, such as the steeple and 5000?
