Most notable prize you ever won?

-$25 steak certificate along with a trucker's hat that said "Beef, It's What You Want"

-Season Pass at a Theme Park along with a night stay at Hilton Hotel near the park.

-Tons and tons of medals, I throw them away now.

I won a trip for 2 to NYC for winning a 10k race in just 31:07. It was one of 4 regional races held around the country for the sponsor that weekend. Fastest time won the trip. Of course, I never thought in a million years I would win the trip. Wife and I had nice 3 day stay in NYC. (this was years ago).

2 tickets to an Our Lady Peace concert.

I won a $150 Barnes and Noble gift certificate for answering eight or nine literary questions in the "New York Times Book Review" correctly. The questions were not hard. There were eight winners.

I went back to my old hometown and won a 10k on a very, very hot day. The first prize was a nice navy blue blazer donated by a clothing store, which I was very intent on getting since my family had dropped huge piles of money at thet store over the years.

Running or non-running?

Running --I won a $50 and a coupon for a quart of B&R ice cream for being the outstanding athlete of the track meet (3 firsts and 3 meet records). It was a youth summer meet sponsored by the Rotary.

Non-running--I won a $1000 scholarship in an essay contest.

A girl I train with won the Willie Nelson Picnic 10K several years ago. She was given a deck of Chipotle playing cards. She thought that was a weird prize and just tossed the deck of cards in a box...turned out it was 52 free burritos cards for Chipotle.

I won a pound of pork chops for getting second in my age group. Since the race was an hour and a half from home, I tried to trade the 3rd place guy for his pound of bologna so my buddy and I would have something to eat on the way home but he wouldn't go for it.

I won a Miller Lite, Neon adverstising light (the kind you see in a bar window) for getting 4th place in a 1/2 marathon once in 1:08; put on by Harbor Beer Distributors. Since I was living in a small apartment at the time I gave it to my brother who had a house with a basement/sports den, where it resides to this day.

racing (foot): $50 gift cert

racing (car): $500

innovation award: $25K plus classy mantle clock plus a week for wife and I at a sweet resort (and tax relief)

a toy penguin stuffed animal, rather large, for winning a road race. i still have it actually, and i really like it. it's a very cheerful looking stuffed animal.

running: a gift certificate to a pizza place and a gift certificate to a nice local restaurant for winning a couple of local races.

non-running: a $10K academic scholarship (this was back in the 80s so it covered far more tuition then) (I wasn't a runner then)

Our cross country team did a 5k in Sparta, Michigan during our summer camp that was part of the town carnival thing. The winners of each age group got an Apple Tree and bottle of apple cider. For some reason all of the festivities were apple themed so they were appropriate prizes. Even though I won my age group my coach still wouldn't let me bring the tree back to Missouri in the van so we had to give it away to some other random racer. Definately one of the strangest prizes i've ever heard of them giving out at a race!

I won a free 6-day trip to Italy, airfare and hotel included. This was the prize to the winner of a "5k" that was really only about 2.9 miles. I think my 5k time would have been around 15:20, but for 2.9 it was 14:21. Pretty sweet deal. They don't give out that prize anymore, unfortunately.

Racing: $80 worth of car wash gift certificates. Also once won a cool trophy with a turkey running in a sideways baseball cap and oversized sneakers.

Non-running: Won a playwriting contest at age 18 and got to have my one act play professionally staged for one night. I still have the DVD.

Three years in a row in a very small local race weekend I placed second (marathon, then HM twice), and each year the prize was a bag of apples. Actually one of the nicest prizes I've won, as they were real juicy, tasty apples. Mind you, the third year I was out tearing down water stops (I was on the race committee) during the awards, and my buddy the RD wound up giving away my bag of apples. Bastard! The thanks, eh? He came to my place about a week later with a bigger bag of apples to replace my missing prize, however, so I forgave him and stopped refusing to run with him. :-)
