While looking over the link of the 100 meter world record progression on the front page I couldn't help but realize the astounding amount of black world record holders who came from the United States, Jamaica, and Canada. Its common logic and stereotype that black people are fast, I know this... but I'm wondering if slavery had anything to do with facorable genetic tendencies being displayed in descendents of slaves.
Over the past 20 resettings of the record 13 times its been done by an American citizen, 4 times by Jamaicans, and 2 times by Canadians. On only one occasion was the record held be anyone outside of these three countries. I personally can't help but believe that this has to be a direct result of the West African slave trade that was so prominent a few hundred years ago. With all of the selective breeding that went on in those days, done in an attempt to produce bigger, stronger, faster, more efficient slaves that had a greater work capacity,is it reasonable to view black people today as being benificiaries of the atrocities committed against their ancestors..
I guess My question is this: is there any scientific evidence that proves or suggests that these West African descendents are the way they are as a result of slavery?? or maybe is it possible that they would've been dominant in the sprinting events even if American slavery had never occured?
