Assume an Arcadia type of meet. I say Derrick, but think it's basically an even matchup.
At the end of his 13:55 5K, Derrick ran an 8:49 3200M, with a final 2:05 and 60 seconds to finish. So he has speed. He also beat German a few months ago in XC, when German was probably the favorite. Derrick probably couldn't do that German double, but he seems like the better racer to me. Tough standards for German... but that's what happens when you're a great runner.
Derrick is very talented,but after that Fernandez double, he would beat Derrick at either distance right now.
derrick would win, id bet my bank account on it....that 13:55 was early in the season with no competion, we have yet to see derricks full capablility on the track, its a shame he got mono:(

Going off of equivilant performances according to McMillan the 13:55 equates to a 4:01 mile and an 8:34 2 mile. Derrick did it with a huge negative split in April with no competition. To say Fernandez would crush if they were heads up and both healthy is stupid. It would be one hell of a race, too bad it won't happen.
Chris Derrick is actually training to compete at the NON two-mile.
I would take Derrick. The 13:55 at that time of the year alone is nuts. Also, the 8:49-4:1? double he ran with mono. Like haha yo said it would be a crazy ass race. I just think the 5k fits Derrick better as well.

Eugene, OR - Luke Puskedra, who signed with the Oregon Ducks on March 18th, will be attempting to break the U.S. 2-mile record this weekend in a special invitational race at the Prefontaine Classic.
The senior will be paced through the race by at least one rabbit who will take him out at a blistering 4:15 per mile pace with the goal of running somewhere in the 8:30 range. The current high school two-mile record was set by Jeff Nelson of Burbank High in 1979 at 8:36.3.
Puskedra ran a PR of 8:49.58 to win the Nike Indoor Nationals earlier this year on a 200 meter non-banked indoor track. Some of the nation-leading high school 2-mile times over the last decade that he bested were: Josh McDougal, 8:50.40, 2004; Galen Rupp, 8:54.45, 2004; Chris Solinsky, 8:56.26, 2003; Dathan Ritzenhein, 8:50.4, 2001; and Andy Powell, 8:50.29, 1999. This will be Puskedra's first appearance at Hayward Field.

If he's actually stupid enough to go out in 4:15, he won't run under 8:40.

I would look for these guys and some others around 2012 or 2016. But that is a long time from now.
Derrick's time was earlier, and a huge negative split. He beat German in XC even after having raced NTN the weekend before. His time in the 5k is better than German's 1600 or 3200 marks. It would be a close one, and I think their two performances are pretty well matched, but in a straight 5k I'd put my money on Derrick.
The good news is, we may find out next spring :D
German has the Woodward Park 5k course record of 14:24, the national HS fed record at 3200 an hour after running a 4:00 1600.
The Woodward Park 5k time is way better than a 13;55 on the track.
Oh yeah, he took up running full time last year. Sick!

webb's 3:53.43 mile gets 1157 points on the iaaf tables, equivalent in quality to an 8:19.11 2 mile.
Do you guys realize that fernandez ran 8:34 TWO AND A HALF HOURS AFTER RUNNING 4:00??? He ran the equivalent of a second and a half off the 2 mile national record shortly after running one of the top 10 1600/mile performances in high school history. He should be able to run at least 8:30 for yards fresh and obliterate Nelson's record. 13:55 is damn impressive, especially given the circumstances, no doubt about that, but there were a good number of high schoolers that ran well under 14 minutes for the and 5k weren't able to touch 8:36.
I feel like there are a lot of Illinois people on this thread.
