Runnersworld had a feature on a few trials qualifiers who worked full time. You can probably search and look it up somewhere. I think one was a doctor or studying to become one, one was a prison guard, one was a teacher/track coach and one worked at a TOGO sandwich shop. I forget their PR's but I think the sandwich maker had run like 2:15 or 2:16.

Didn't Bill Rodgers have a full time job when we was running well in the mid 70s, surely way under 2:19. And as a side-note, I think Roger Bannister was a doctor when he cracked 4.

I can't believe that someone with sub-30 10K ability is not able to crack 2:20 in the marathon, let alone 'get stuck' at 2:24-2:27. Sounds like a failed training program and a lot of wasted effort doing the wrong things.

Anyone with the ability to run 29:30 for 10K can crack 2:19 with the proper training.

How long have these sub-30 guys been running 120 miles per week? If they're getting stuck at mid-2:20s, I would guess not long. I would HOPE not long, otherwise that's a long time to spend doing the wrong training.

I don't know anyone who has run faster than 2:26, and that was off sub-32 10K ability, and four years of marathon specific training.

Rodgers was working full time as a hospital orderly in 1975 when he won Boston in 2:09. Jon Anderson was doing the same thing in 1973 when he won Boston. Ron Hill worked as a textile chemist. Anyone who was running before the late 70s was probablyworking full time if they were out of school.

there was a write up on i believe runnersweb a couple of months ago and it said canadian marathoner jerome drayton is disappointedno canadian is near his canadian marathon record of 2:10.08. drayton said these guys are full time runners while he always had to work a full time job.

Uli Steidl has a PR of 2:13 and was, until recently, working full time (I believe he has put that on hold and is now racing more, trying to get on the German Olympic team, and winning every ultra he enters).

back in the old days - there were droves of guys who ran sub 2:20:00, working at the mill or the factory - nobody has heard of them because 2:15 - 2:19 was nothing special.

Me. I worked very long hours as a lawyer at a big law firm. My daily schedule was simple: Run. Work. Run. Work. Sleep. I generally worked seven days a week. I raced very little. When I had an out-of-town race, I usually flew out the evening before the race, and flew back the next afternoon.
