How much time do you think one can improve in a 5k over the course of a year? I've run 17:52 on a pretty normal XC course... a few small hills and running over sand 3 times. I know I can go faster but I ran out of races. I just kept improving all year and my last race I ran a 20 second PR to run 17:52. If I were to keep racing I know I would keep improving to about 17:45 or so. Do you think that if I train my *** off, running 70-90 mpw in the winter with tempo's, fartleks, and long intervals, then running an outdoor season, and then another season of 70-90 mpw during the summer, would I be able to break 16 or at least get very low 16's on the same course? Is that kind of improvement possible?
A little background info on me. I didn't run XC or indoor my freshman year and ran 20 mpw during outdoor. Then sophmore year I didn't run XC but added on indoor and ran 20 mpw through indoor and outdoor. Then last summer I put in about 650 miles over the summer and came out for XC this year. Since I've only had 4 running seasons under my belt does this mean I have more improvement in me than someone whose run more seasons?
