If you know it is going to be hot and humid on race day, is it better to go with the 5K or the 10K? At which distance is performance less affected by the heat?
In my personal experience, the longer the race in the heat, the more your performance will suffer. I can race 800 and mile/1500 in heat/humidity very close to my best, but 3k or longer, forget it. I ran a 10,000 in ~ 27C with high humidity and was ~ 1:15 off my expected time. A half marathon in similar conditions, I was ~ 6 minutes off my expected time.

This. The shorter the race in heat, the absolute better.
