New procedure this year for the Trials; no more chasing the "A" after the Trials. If you don't have it going in, tough luck. Here's a thread on the T&FN Board that discusses it:

So here's the issue: A lot of our studs don't have the "A" yet for events the they'll be competing in at the Trials. For example, Lagat doesn't have it for the 5,000, and Kara Goucher doesn't have it in the 10,000. That's a WC gold medalist and a WC bronze medalist who don't have the "A" for the events in which they medaled going in to the Trials. That means both Kara and Bernard need a fast race - soon.
My question is, why are people at that level in this position? Lagat, in particular, should have his "A" out of the way by now. Probably not a big deal for him to get it, but Goucher is going to have to find a fast 10,000, then turn right around and run the 10 at the Trials, and then the Games. Not exactly ideal. Goucher is more understandable because last year was really a breakout year for her at 10,000.
There are going to be some barnburners this spring as people chase their "A" standards. Christian Smith (1:44 & 3:38 in '06) is another example, but that situation is understandable because he missed '07 due to complications from a burst appendix.
I'll never understand why people who are perfectly capable of getting the "A" don't plan ahead better.
