How did Doug Padilla (AW) make the finals? Did he something happen in the Heats because if it was the first 4 plus 2 fastest losers qualifying, he doesn't make the cut, does he?
GRod, obviously if there are two semifinals of 12 then 4 pl;us two in the qualifying round is a misprint. However, Padilla being 7th in 14:25 in heat two doesn't seem to be a strategem that any game theorist in the world would endorse. I bet something happened. A fall?

Well, with 24 people in the semis, it seems reasonable to assume that the heats were top 4 plus 12 fastest. In that case, with 5th place in the first heat in 14:29, and only 19 competitors entered in the second and third heats, EVERYONE in heats two and three who ran faster than 14:29 would be guaranteed to advance. So the assuming the game theorist managed to watch the first heat while doing a few strides, and saw the 5th place time, he'd know that 7th in 14:25 was a no-risk proposition.
Oops, missed that one, Ferris. Actually the arbitrage was even better. Padilla only needed to run 14:32.31, regardless of place, to make the final. Once Clary dropped, it became 14:35.
