She ran 15:52.37 indoors, but the 32:11 was a shock. I saw her run at the NCAA indoor and she certainly was not in the anorexic category.
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Iowa State three-time All-American Lisa Koll raced to the American Collegiate 10,000-meter record Friday night, winning the race at the Stanford Invitational in 32:11.13. The Fort Dodge, Iowa native's mark broke the previous record of 32:19.97 set by Alicia Craig of Stanford in 2004. The collegiate record is 31:56.72 by Kenya's Sally Kipyego for Texas Tech in 2007. Cyclone Grace Kemmey was 15th in a personal best and NCAA Championship qualifying 33:59.70.
"Unbelievable," Iowa State head track coach Corey Ihmels said. "We set out to run 78-second laps with the goal of running 32:30. But with 10 laps left (Koll) looked at me and we said 'lets go.' She passed (Blake Russell/Reebok) and was still impatient and ran around (Magdlena Lewy) Boulet.
Russell was second in 32:14.91 and Boulet third.
Koll, a sophomore, was shocked by her performance and how good she felt the entire race.
"Halfway through, I felt fine and was pacing myself behind Blake (Russell)," Koll said. "I was really relaxed. With about two miles to go I looked at coach (Ihmels) and we decided to go for it. I sped up the laps, to 75 and 76 and with 800 (meters) left I heard on the PA that 32:19 was the American Collegiate record. I guess the last lap was 73. I'm amazed. I am confident and the longer the race the more comfortable I am. Because I was comfortable I could run those fast laps. I am waiting for someone to pinch me."

Lisa Koll Interview - New American Collegiate Record Holder 10000
I was there. It was awesome.
Russell took it out hard and it looked like a runaway for a while. She probably had 7 seconds lead at the mile, and got a bit more of a gap after that. She had the lead at around 8-10 seconds probably after 2 miles. A friend and I were joking at that time that was it better for Russell to do a time trial by herself on the track rather than come to the meet. Both of us thought a time trial was better (and we were dead wrong).
Koll tucked in from the beginning behind was in 3rd the whole time behind Magdalena. Magdalena was doing all the work. With Koll right behind her.
Russell was 16:11 at 5K I think. So Magdalena was probably 10 seconds back of that, with Koll right behind her.
Finally, it started to look like Magdalena was closing the gap on Russell. I started timing the gap and it was closing. Maybe with 6 laps to go (or less), it was down to less than 3 seconds.
Then it seemed like Russell started to go a bit faster. I think she could tell by the crowd (all cheering for the local Magdalena) that the gap was closing. It probably went a lap where Russell maybe increased her lead to 4 seconds.
Then Koll went around Magdalena and started to close the gap on Russell. With about 3 laps to go she caught Russell. She maybe stayed a lap behind Russell, then passed her. Russell fought and didn't let the gap get very large.
Koll looked great in the final lap.
Incredible race. I hope someone took a video. It is a must see.
From the above description, Koll's final 5000 must have been about 15:50!

This does not surprise me as much as I thought a 32:11 this early in the season would. At indoor nats, I talked to a guy from her team who seemed "invested" in her training ;), and he mentioned they had been doing VO2 stuff at 5min miling or better and she was clipping it off - ready to go 15:30s. She was probably just fatigued during indoors and now she adapted to that workload.
SICK RACE!!!

Comments like that are what takes away from a truly amazing runner. I happen to know Lisa Koll through being a past member of the Iowa State Track Team, and she is THE most hardworking track athlete i have ever met. What she has achieved so far at Iowa State is through hard work, sacrafice, discipline and her love for running. America should be celebrating the fact we have an emerging star here, who is not scared of anyone, and believes in herself, they are the attributes of a someone who will go far.
I just did it for a reaction. Surprised it took so long...Thank you. And by the way, I believe completely that this run was a result of miles of hard work and mental and physical strength.

I still remember the great Peg Nepal from Iowa State in the mid 70s, setting all kinds of records. She was a great one. RIP Peg!

What? Original poster wanted to know why nobody was talking about the 32:11 women's American collegiate record - what are you talking about?
Iowa State must be made up of a lot of slackers, I am assuming you have never met any of the other "hardest" working athletes around the country, and even more so, the world.Congrats to Lisa, she ran a great race. She is joining a large group of athletes who also work very hard for their sport. But she is not alone.
