Question about finish line number orientation

No, not THAT kind of orientation. Hear me out on this one.

Why are some numbers oriented perpendicular to the lane stripes like this one:

Yet some are parallel to the stripes, like this:

Is one style more prevalent in Europe, whereas the other more in the U.S.?

Lastly, which do you prefer, perpendicular or parallel? Thanks.

IMHO I just think it's for the camera/crowd shot. The perpendicular numbers always face the crowd, so it's probably aimed at those watching the event. The parallel numbers would probably benefit the runners more, but if you're running the race you'll probably know what lane you're in. Either that, or you won't care what lane you're in, just what PLACE you're in.
