hmmm...geb and radcliffe with all this asthma--and even better, "exercise-induced asthma"--stuff...
maybe a convenient excuse to back out when the drug testing is a little too tough or they have not cleansed the old systems properly?

Gee, that makes a lot of sense. Oh, wait, Geb said he's running the 10k. Which means...you guessed it, he's gonna get tested.
But continue on with your idle speculation.
Will Haile make the team?
K. Bekele, T. Bekele, Sihine, Gebremariam, Merga, Tola, Fikadu, Wondimu, etc.
my my, did we not discuss "exercise induced asthma " only the other day. I knew Paula was troubled by it in the past, I thought that perhaps she'd gotten over it. I'm a fan but
I don't consider any world record or world best performance
valid if it was obtained with medication that changes the subjects natural ability to perform "miracles".
Sorry Paula, you too Geb, if you're dosing up on asthma medication even within the rermit of a TUE you're not a record holder, just a mortal who can run as well as others with a little help from his friends. Take the prize money by all means but records should be unassisted.
Aw maaaaan... I really wanted to see him win gold in the marathon... I guess Haile's days of winning Olympic gold are behind him, unless he can pull out a miracle against KB.

first step: put treadmill in garage
second step: close garage
third step: turn on car
fourth step: run for two hours at 5 minute per mile pace
if this doesn't sound like fun then maybe you understand why people don't want to run the marathon in Beijing.
this now opens the way for Mr Tergat to win gold - what say you 430miler?

totally. the best in the world are clean because they say so. just like all of those who were finally caught said so.
marion was clean because she swore it and seemed like a nice girl. same with soft spoken, good old tyler hamilton. the list of clean athletes goes on and on (don't even start me on MLB or the NFL), but we'll cut this short for convenience.
i'm a moron.
should they run without shoes also? How about without training at altitude, multivitamins or coaches. DAMN THOSE PERFORMANCE ENHANCERS!!!!

Good news for the Americans. Deena and Meb ran great in Athens, which was pretty hot and humid as well. I really hope are guys and girls are seriously preparing for the heat and humidity because it will be a wide open race in the marathon. I'd expect at least one relative unknown to make the podium in each race and China, Japan and Korea also will probably run well.
1) Let's use some f***ing judgement here. Not everyone is clean, and not everyone is dirty.
2) You think that Marion was nice? I'm going to guess that you never had the pleasure of working with her professionally. She was total bitch to anyone that had to work with her. She also had her husband/boyfriend/coach/agent/training partners all go down. Was there ever really any doubt?
We all know what Jos did, but don't assume that extends to Geb. I'd bet the house, the money in the bank, the wife and kids and my own life that he is 100% legit. Are you so sure that you would take that bet?
OK so as I was firmly told the other day asthma treatments have no effect on non-asthma sufferers, but who's to say that they don't take real cases from 90% to 105%. There are far far far too many top sports people who are probably genuinely asthmatic putting in fantastic performances for it not to be
anything but pure coincidence. That fabulous cyclist Indurain who dominated the two wheel world for 5 years before Lance was -asthmatic as are about 60% of Spain's pro cyclists. In a recent olympics 17 % of the athletes had asthma and 30% of those won medals. Not saying asthma medication is wrong but WADA must surely look at the positive effects. 2 marathon world record holders= 2 asthmatics.
Meb required an inhaler for his "asthma" in Athens. Dr. Randy Wilbur stated that it was necessary even though he was never diagnosed prior to Athens.
and he had time to get a TUE??
I suppose with a federal doctor on hand it would just be a formality though.
This isn't totally out of character for Geb. There was one year when he said he wouldn't run the 10k at worlds because the track was too hard. Then he said he would only run it if they watered it down to soften it up. When the organizers finally convinced him that would actually make the track harder he said he was out again. In the end Adidas made him some special spike with more padding so he would run. For the life of me I can't remember what year it was and I don't have time at the moment to look it up.
an improvement in FEV1 (how much volume one can blow out in 1 sec) is the main marker of obstructive lung disease, of which asthma is one. in clinical trials beta-agonists, mainly albuterol, increase FEV1 only in symptomatic asthmatics, with severity of disease roughly proportional to clinical response. Reactive airway disease (asthma) cause small airways within the lungs to constrict so you get air trapping...severe asthmatics know that it is VERY hard to get all your breath out during an acute exacerbation...beta-agonists dilate constricted brochioles (small airways) and improve air flow into and out of the lungs.
If one is not an asthmatic, they, by definition, get no benefit from beta-agonists. it is easy to understand this physiologically bc a healthy person's airways are already adequately dilated and any further stimulation of the bronchiolar smooth muscle (which is the end result of beta agonists) does not measurably improve breathing. it is also important to remember that there are two types of beta receptors - b1, found mainly in the heart, and b2, found in bronchioles of the lung, among other places. Therefore, albuterol (b2 agonist) main effect is on the lungs (though there is a little cross-over that might lead to a racing heart on administration in some people).
Now, the treatment recommendation for exercise induced asthma is 2 puffs of albuterol before excercise. This offers no competitive advantage to no asthmatics and simply makes an asthmatic on the same playing field as non-asthmatics.
Far from "90% to 105%", a healthy patient's improvement in lung function is non-existent. Please do not speculate on matters that you know nothing about.
@ misinformation kills, thank you very much - you just saved me a lot of time writing all that out myself! You're pretty much bang on w/ everything
