This would be a great running quote because it rings very true.
"The will to prepare is infinitely more important than the will to win"

yet another quote that Knight didn't make up
"The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare"
Christian Cantwell's quote on the home page is also one Knight used years ago at Indiana. I don't think it was originally Knight's.
mark twain i think
"I think that if rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it." - during an NBC interview with Connie Chung.
Juma Inkanga (OK, lasat name may be spelled wrong)
it's not a quote, but the press conference where he brought the bullwhip and was showing the reporters how the "blood" was dripping off the tip was hilarious. that guy was great. god bless him.
"The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare"
A Gen. George S. Patton quote, an olympian himself (1912 modern pentathlon, which had a 4k cross country run among it's events).
I think that is a great quote.
In my view, it seems the race starts as soon as one starts to train. A good training session boosts moral and ignites the flames of passion. A string of bad training sessions is as demoralizing as being lapped in a race that one expects to win.
Careful preparation minimizes failure and enhances gains. Psychologically one is at an advantage if the training consistently goes well.
Focus on the result starts months or even years before the main event, not on the starting line.
My view: Lose focus on the objective or train in a half ass way, is the same as doing the same on race day.
