I've heard about the following rough guide: For every 1% loss of body weight, your pace decreases by 1%.
So if I (at 175 lbs) lost 10 lbs, my 5K pace (5:35 min/mile) would decrease by 19 sec/mile. Thus, my 5K time would decrease from 17:20 to 16:21. (See below for CALCULATIONS.)
My question is this: Is anyone familiar with this guide, and if so is it reliable? Is anyone familiar with other ways to estimate increases in running speed associated with weight loss?
CALCULATIONS:
(1-165/175) = 0.057, which is a 5.7% difference.
5K pace is 335 sec/mile, and 335x0.057=19.
So the increase in pace is 19 sec/mile.
