Can you benchpress your marathon time?

Marathon: 3:26 (blew up at 22 and walked the last 4 miles)

Bench: (on Nautilus) 250 lbs (I pushed the whole stack and was I ever surprised!)

...never did a freeweight bench PR attempt.

It would be easier to do this by converting marathon time to minutes. I can't bench 190 lbs.

Does the ages when you do them matter? In my 20's and weighing about 175-185 I benched a high of 315. I didn't start running until age 33 and 13 years later I ran a pr marathon of 3:02:00 at age 46. I always had a good bench but don't peak anymore. I would think if I trained I could probably bench around 250ish but I would likely have to put on a few lbs over my current 155 weight. I think I can probably run a sub-3 marathon now at age 49 with a few 20 milers. But not with the additional weight.

A bench press on a machine is completely meaningless.

That's true. Also the way the op is doing it by going under any hour you get to take 40 lbs off your bench. If you run a 3 hr marathon you have to bench 300 lbs but if you run a minute faster at 2:59 you only have to bench 259. I actually think that might be doable for me. Your way I'd definitely be able to bench 159, probably 10 reps easily.

I think it would be pretty easy if faster runner types took a year off due to injury or what not and weight trained.

I could do this either way you want to calculate it easily and am not particlularly fast nor strong. In my peak weight lifting shape, I could probably do about 5 reps at my fastest marathon time with the harder calculation method. With the easier calculation, I could do at minimum 15 reps. However, I never would have tried to do a marathon during the time while I lifted or vice versa.

It would have been close for me if I'd tried a marathon at my best. 5k is just under 15 and I've benched 230. Probably easier to go up in the bench than down in the marathon though.

-completely. couldn't agree more. kudos for getting that 250 up on a nautilus, but that is about 170 on free weight. very good too if you don't routinely lift weights!

Age 24: 2:57 marathon

Age 24: 305 bench

Age 22: 2:49 marathon

Age 32: 365 bench

Age 35 (now): I'm lucky if my overworked ass can run 4 miles

Age 35 (now): 285 bench
