I have used the maxcats in the 800 and i love them. I haven't used the new ones yet.
i used to wear them when i was an 400open/800 guy, but now that i only run the 800, i moved up to the milers.
I know a guy who runs the 800m in the maxcats...and 5mile XC in the maxcats. It seems to work for him
i used the maxcats in the 400/800 my jr year of high school, it was okay. moved to the milers my senior year for the 400/800/1600, also okay.
in college i've moved up to the lanangs, i just like they way they feel better than the milers.
The Maxcat and JSC before have long been used by faster runners for the 800. The Maxcat II is no different, although heavier. I've done it myself with the JSC. The catch, though, is that these are sprint spikes, and they work for 800 if you use sprint mechanics and run primarily on the balls of your feet. If you "sit back" more and run more on your heels like a 10000 type, you are better off with distance spikes. There are also a couple of 200-800 spikes like the zoom shift to consider, once again, if you have the proper mechanics for a sprint spike.
Personally, after the well-discussed Nike corruption with USATF and the Eugene Oly Trials, I've switched over to the Asics Japan Lite-ning, once Eastbay finally put them on sale. The monodensity plate is a little stiffer than the Maxcat, so you get more effecient usage of energy at speed, but the weight is what the JSC used to be. It was a bit of a shock to put my Nike G5s (the Powercat is just slightly lighter) on the scale with the Japan lite-ning, and see that TWO Japan lite-nimgs weigh the same as ONE of Nike's top-of-the-line sprint spikes, and there is also a significant weight advantage over the new Maxcat.
