high school coaching salary

At my small, middle class, suburban school, head coaches get 6% of their teaching salary, so at a 40k base salary you'd make about same as you do now, $2,400. Track assistants get 3-4% (depending on how many we have) so $1,200-1,600.

My cross country program has around 30 kids with only the head coach getting paid through the school. We have to fundraise on our own to pay assistant coaches, otherwise it comes out of my pocket. My predecessor was a generous guy who didn't care at all about the money. He set a difficult precedent by paying his assistants out of his own pocket and buying his own supplies, rather than getting help from the athletic department.

I would coach for free too (and I have before) but for a young teacher, it's much easier to pay the bills during track and cross country season.

For what it's worth, I coached xc for men & women at a small D2 college. The stipend was $7000 but my assistants were paid from my own pocket. Not all expenses were covered. For example, when we had a road trip that required me to miss school (I am a teacher), I had to pay for substitutes out of my own pocket. The previous coach did give the runners lots of things paid for out of his own pocket to make up for a small equipment budget, but in the process set a bad precedent as well as probably committed some NCAA violations. I do not coach for the money, but it does not hurt & what made be leave the position was the possibility of the job actually costing me money. I coached at the high school level for many years but before I left $2000 to $3000 was the norm for coaching a single gender team. For a lot less work, I could do that again.

Almost all high school coaches do it for the love of the sport and not the money. When I was coaching and people asked me how much I made my reply was, "If I worked the same number of hours flipping burgers as I put into coaching (planning, travel, practice, time at meets, meetings)I would make more money flipping the burgers."

"It ain't about the money" (Mo Vaughn), get $2604 for xc 42 girls on the team with no asst., get the same for Indoor with 45 girls and a part-time asst.

Outdoors it goes up to $2950 with a part-time asst., 55 girls on the team.

This is a small school with a graduating class of 96 this year, the team is made up of girls grades 7-12.

I guess I had it good, $3,600 for a rookie HS asistant cross coach. The head coach was about 7k. We had two school funded asistants and one was paid for with fundraising. None of this money went to team expenses. Huge high school, about 4,000 kids, in rich area. Boys & girls combined for about 110 kids. Very strong, well established teams.

I'm in a similar spot, head coach at the most affluent private school in one of the biggest cities in the country. In my first year I get $3500 per season. Less than a dozen athletes in each track and cc makes it a pretty easy gig.

I make 800 dollars for XC

I make 800 dollars for Indoor track

I make 800 dollars for outdoor track

I think when I did the math it work out to be about 75 cents an hour

I love coaching but because of the pay I will probably just coach XC in the future rather than the other two. The 75 cents an hour isn't worth the time I spend away from my wife.

Bromfield. The student athletes pay a user fee for each sport, that fee covers all expenses including my stipend.

I get about $3500 as head xc coach. I have two paid assistants who are around $2400. We have a total of about 80 kids per year and are the winningest program at our school--not that that would have anything to do with my salary!

I get about $2500 as assistant track coach. Head coach gets about $3500, and he has 3 paid assistants.

IMHO, head track should probably get more than head xc--more kids, more meets, more hassles, longer season.

In Connecticut, the ritzier schools pay over 5k for indoor and outdoor (each) and over 4k for xc. It's one place where it's actually a part time job.

Zero Dollars and Zero Cents!

All volunteer! Well it not even really volunteer because it is expected as a staff(Teacher) member. (or for some staff)

Track and XC I coach because I love it. Other sports it kills me to give up weekend after weekend with no extra pay for it. Especially when trying to train and compete full time myself.

$3,000 for coaching girls/boys track. I coach at a tiny high school with less than 15 kids on the team. I love it and would do it for free.

About $14K altogether: $6K for CC (boys & girls head), $4200 for indoor (head) and #3800 for outdoor (asst.)

Something like $2800 for XC and $3300 for T&F in Arizona.

Those who say they make less than a buck an hour need to brush up on their math--even the person who said his/her measly $800 came out to 75 cents an hour. Please. You don't work 1067 hours in a season (that would work out to 82 hours a week for a 13-week season). I grant you that we put in off-season time, etc. But still, that person's total take was $2400 for three seasons. Assuming zero weeks off, that would be 61 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, to earn 75 cents an hour. It's bad, but it ain't that bad.

Sorry for the math lesson. I know we all do it because we love it. But I think we compromise ourselves if we overstate our poverty that much.
