Begins tenure March 3
Feb. 18, 2008
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Matt Kerr has been named head coach of the Boston College men's track and field team, Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo announced Monday. Kerr comes to BC after spending three seasons as an assistant coach for the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams at Wake Forest.
Kerr will take over the men's team for head coach Randy Thomas, who spent the last 15 seasons as director of both the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. Thomas will remain as the women's head coach. This is the first time BC has hired two separate directors for the individual squads.
"We are very excited to have someone of Matt's caliber join the BC athletic community," Senior Associate Athletic Director Jody Mooradian said. "This is a great opportunity for coach Randy Thomas to focus his attention on the success of the women's team and have Matt be able to concentrate on the needs and achievements of the men."
Prior to his three years of coaching experience, Kerr compiled a long list of track experience and achievements. Most recently, he was the 2007 Canadian steeplechase champion. He also qualified in that same event for the World Track and Field Championships in 2005 and 2003 as a member of Team Canada.
"I'm thrilled about the Boston College head coach position," Kerr said. "It's very exciting to be able to move up in the coaching ranks and help build on an already successful program."
While earning his Master's in Business Administration from the University of Wollongong in Wollongong, Australia, Kerr was a five-time Australian University Games Champion. He earned his postgraduate degree in 2002. As an undergraduate at the track powerhouse University of Arkansas, Kerr was the individual NCAA champion in the steeplechase in 1998 and 1999. He received a degree in Business Administration in 2000.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Kerr will officially start as the BC men's head coach on March 3. He is married to the former Wake Forest assistant track coach Jill Snyder Kerr and has a daughter, Madeline Louise Kerr.
