if you ever hear a cyclist tell you they shave for road rash reasons, don't trust too much else they say unless their arms are shaven too. I've crashed a few times in races, and the scrapes on hips/arms/elbows are way worse in terms of total area than legs. Maybe knees get chewed up, but they aren't that hairy anyway. If they are really that worried about the pain from removing a bandage, they probably shouldn't be cycling. If they say it's for "sanitary" reasons and they hairs can cause infection, than ever 12 year old in the world would have shaved legs, because they get scraped up all the time.
I started because guys on my team played up the road rash theory, but after a couple months I realized, whether everyone else thinks so or not, it's pretty pointless. I do it solely because I think it looks better than my naturally overly hairy legs. If there were some easy way to get an in-between I'd probably do that, but I honestly have grown accustomed to it and do like the look with my toned calves.
