I know most rules dictate that the lappee move out to lane 2. I remember at Dogwood one year Aufdemberge was about to get lapped in the 10,000 and he picked it up and actually ran with the lapper for 2 laps.
It used to be in some national meets that when you got lapped you had to drop out. Anyone ever experience this? Does this rule still exist anywhere?

(1) Not really, but the crowd was booing him, and at least one official tried to grab him and haul him off the track. What an ass. The runner, I mean, not the official. I woulda clotheslined the guy.

Not that it means anything, but he was DQ'ed. Skah was booed at the awards ceremony, and there was conjecture that he too would be dq'ed but it was determined that he was an innocent benefactor so his win stood. No doubt Chelimo was hampered/distracted with 3 and 2 laps to go but on the final lap he was not hindered. Still, a crummy deal for Chelimo but at the same time it would have been unfair to dq Skah. Other guy was a toal dork and a disgrace to his country imo.

A few years ago, at the SEC indoor 5000m at Arkansas, when you got lapped you had to be in the top 15 or you got pulled. We actually had a cluster of guys around the 15th spot, and they let 19 through. A friend told me at Big 12s they only would allow 10 or 12 to stay on.
Outdoors in the 10,000m we didn't have that rule (at least in one instance), but I do remember guys stepping off the track thinking they had to.
Sure back in the 80s if we had more than 10 runners in any distance event we ran two races, an "A" and a "B". The last think a guy running a 3:50 1500m wants is to be passing some guy running 4:40. Made for some good races, nobody got lapped, no congestion.
The general rule is though that the runner doing the passing has to yell "track" and the runner being passed moves out to lane two/three. If the passer does not yell "track" then how does the guy in front know to move.
I was being lapped in an indoor 3,000m races once, the fella just flew by me on my right hand side and then a second later I hear "track" by the guy pursuing him and so I moved out into lane two and WHAM a big collision. Idiot tried to pass me on the right anyway. The guy ran right into me. He gave me crap after the race but a whole load of people heard him yell and he got DQ'ed.
best bet in my exp is to stay where you are if they are closing in too fast. He can see you,you can't see him, so it's his responsibility. It sounds like he was looking to start shit.
You should have slugged him. It sounds like many would have supported you.
FYI: The NCAA rulebook states that, "A competitor who is lapped in a distance race shall run a normal course." Although the passing runner might be forced to run farther it avoids collisions, which is a worse outcome. Good clerks remind the field of this rule at before the start of a distance race.

It's not fair if the front runner has to pass everyone on the outside but the second place runner gets to stay on the inside. I say keep everyone on the track doing the best they can once the race starts.
In my college conference in the late '80s/early '90s, you got pulled once you were lapped. It was a very competitive distance conference, and races were huge. As a frosh, I remember using my kick to make it to 3k (in the 5k) before getting yanked. Incidentally, I pr'ed as a frosh, running 8:20 through 3k and got lapped the next lap.
My homeboys wouldn't let me count it as an official pr. Fortunately, I didn't get lapped after that humiliating freshman year.
That is the kind of motivation that shame provides. The message was that if you get lapped, you are just taking up space that should be reserved for the real athletes.
Although I was once on the losing end of this practice, I like it.
This discussion has come up before on here. I always refer back to an instance in 1980 or so when running a 5000 in Canberra. There were about 15 of us in the race, quite a range in ability. When asked where he wanted us to move, Deek said "stay where you are, that way I know what to do".
In addition, you can sometimes find high school events indoors where the first place runner in a distance event can be a national class athlete. The second or third place guy could be running a qualifier of sorts and yet have to run longer by racing the last few laps in lane two. Go ahead, flame away, but he has as much right to the lane as the first guy. And everybody knows right where he's going to be. The stud will have his day.
If you're indoors, just stay where you are. Don't try to move out, don't jump out of the way, just stay where you are, let them pass you. They can see you, and you can't see them, so let them make the decision of how and when to pass you. The only time you should ever move out is if you see/hear them coming from a ways back and know you have enough time to get out of the way safely.
I think the general rule is to stay where you are, except on the bell lap. If they hear the bell and are likely to get lapped, most runners will move to lane 2 as a courtesy.

Please tell who these 5km runners were in your conference.
If you ran a 3000 in 8:20 and got lapped, that would mean the first place runner is at least 30 seconds ahead of you (presuming you are on anything approaching a 200m indoor track as 8:20 is over 33 seconds/200m).
Who in NCAA history has ever split a 5000, let alone an indoor 5000 in 7:50 or better for 3000? That's 13:03 pace for the full distance.
Maybe it was a 145 or 160m track? You're right, that doesn't make sense if it was a 200m track.
