If I'm already running 70 mpw and shooting for sub-4 1500m and low-15 5k, is it better to tack on a couple miles to my runs, or fit in a stomach workout?

I ran 3:47 for 1500 and 14:18 for 5k without ever doing situps. I say run the extra miles.
Realistically, it should be some core workouts, not just situps. Strong base for strong legs.
By core workouts, you mean things like squats, push-ups, pull-ups, etc?
I'm glad to hear someone has had success without doing these things. My feeling has been that the miles are more valuable at this point. I do some push-ups a few times a week, but I don't have time for anything else.
Core work is not squats or push ups, although both moves engage the core. Core work involves ab work, which includes the crunch or sit up, but also leg lifts, throw downs, bicycles etc....and moves that involve the back muscles as well. Even things like kneeling on hands and knees and lifting up the opposite arm and leg, or balance work is core work. You would be a stronger runner if you did some core work...
A core routine takes all of five minutes a couple of times a week.
Well, you can always add plyometrics. It works for the Ethio boys & girls.
