Expanding the stub on first photo, that is Dupont carpet (antron) laid over the steelgrates of the Queensboro Bridge(59th Street bridge) south walkway going from Queens into Manhattan- the 16 mile mark is near the apex of the bridge.

I have a 1972 issue. It's still basically black and white publication format with Frank Shorter on the cover. I believe there was also red used on the cover so that was a first.

Running shoes???

Memories are fun! I have just come across a couple of old Runner's Worlds also. Here is the March 1971 issue with Frank Shorter and Jack Bacheler on the cover It contains an interview of the two together by Dave Prokop and Joe Henderson. The issue cost $.75 and also had an exerpt of Hal Higdon's "On the Run from Dogs and People.

The The 1970 issues cost fifty cents each. November 1970 has Ron Hill and Jerome Drayton on the cover.

Here is the April 1973 issue. It is in colour and has runners jogging on a grass median in Santa Monica. Hal Higdon and Janet Newman were two of the Senior Contributors and among the Special Contributors listed are Richard Amery, Orville Atkins, Percy Cerutty, Nat Cirulnick Ted Corbitt, Nick Costes, Tom Osler, Des O'Neill, Dave Prokop, Hugh Sweeney and Ken Young. The 1970s were a great time in our running world.

Not sure about '72, but by '75 we were wearing adidas Viennas and Countrys, Nike Cortez, Tigers, Pumas. Penny's ad a decent shoe that was extremely cheap. All had thin dense EVA that wore like steel. I remember some of the first New Balance shoes, felt like running on pillows in comparison. They were made poorly compared to the others, my heel counter broke down and became detached in less than 100 miles. Before every run I taped it in place hoping it would last through that effort.

Looks like Tom Wysocki 2nd from left in the sub 4 add. Great prep runner from Western HS in Las Vegas, would go on later to run 28:18 in the '80 OT 10K. College at Univ. Nev/Reno,. usually in the mix any race he ran, tough as nails. Married to ...

Ha - taping the heel counter... suddenly, I remember the sound and sensation of running in a pair of shoes where the outsole had separated from the midsole.

Thud-flop! Thud-flop! Thud-flop! Thud-flop!

I had a pair of Adidas (or maybe they were knock offs - might have had four stripes instead of three) that did eventually peeled back to the ball of the foot.

Thanks for the blasts from the past. I'll trot this out-- given to me in summer '93 as a choice for my first marathon. The donor used this to run a 3:42 in the '82 Twin Cities Marathon... not bad for a guy in his early 40s w/a wind-up toy form and pace. (I went with another 12-week program.)

I smile when I see this; love particularly the 18-miler 10 days before race day. Cutback weeks? Taper? 2+ 20-milers? Couch to proud marathon finisher/charity solicitor?

Thanks for this. 1983 was my first year running. The ad for resoling reminded me that I got many of my running shoes from a place called Second Sole. I can't remember if the resoling came with the price of the shoes or if they just offered the service. Did that several times after Shoe Gooing many times.

And the comment about the prices is spot on. Now I understand much more about how much my parents spent for me to participate in XC and track.

Ah the 70's no heart rate monitors you ran by feel, no GPS unbits, no air soles.

I remember reecving a copy of the first edition of Distance Running News from Bob Anderson with a hand written note saying that he hoped we could make the new magazine a fine running magazine. In the mid seventie, after the name was changed to Runner's World I purchased a lifetime subscripion for $100.00 and I have been getting Runner's World ever since. The Shorter/Bacheler interview has a page introduction and six pages of interview. There is a Jeff Johnson picture of a track race in which Shorter, Eamon O'Reilly and Bacheler are running as a group. The article ends with Bacheler saying "we're getting a new track at Florida, and probably in March we'll go for good times in the 10-mile, 20 Kilometer and one hour". When Shorter was asked if he would try those events too he said "Gee, sure".

I do know that they both also ran the Nationasl AAU Marathon in Eugene on June 6, !971. Shorter was in the seat ahead of me on the plane from San Francisco to Eugene. The programme has full length pictures of Jim Ryun and Steve Prefontaine. Kenny Moore won that marathon and then Shorter went on to win every marathon he ran for the next 5 years.
