Aasics.

I like Brooks.
Brooks. Mizuno is also up there. When you look at their full spectrum of product, both of these brands make good stuff all around. Shoes, apparel, and accessories.
No question in my mind. Nike. Even though they screwed up the Pegasus, again, I still back them. I like the Nike Ipod thing, i run with it daily.
I like Brooks just because it's all about running. Nike caters to every sport imaginable. I just like how Brooks is completely focused on competitive running.
good point on the brooks brand. but nike + ipod. how many times have i read that real runners don't run with ipods. way tooo many.... how is a brand that also makes golf shoes, going to make better shoes than a brand that primarily makes running shoes. come on, do the math...
Asics for shoes
Nike for clothing

Nike did start with running. I'm sure they have plenty of people working within each sport. Nike is a well-oiled machine and certainly the most successful brand. That said, I do not like Nike's running shoes. They do make good clothes though. Mizuno was my favorite brand of training shoes, but now that I've switched to minimalism, I like Adidas.
Brooks has decent apparel, but Mizuno's line is fairly limited. That said, Mizuno has the best line of trainers around. They've really left Asics behind.
I've gotta go with Nike. I've never worn a Nike trainer, but I love their flats and spikes. Obviously, nobody can compete with them in terms of apparel.
Nike does make the best spikes, but I have not worn their flats (unless you count the Free as a flat). To be more specific....
Training Shoes - Mizuno
Racing Flats - Adidas
Track Spikes - Nike
Socks - Asics
Shorts - Brooks
Tops - Nike
Every brand has something to offer. The market is so strong at this point you cannot really point to one brand and say it is the best. Sure, you can look at who has the greatest market share, but everyone has different needs. Try out a few brands and determine which one fits your individual needs.

So focused they've eliminated their only lightweight neutral trainer? It's all about the Bens with them too.

The Burn 3 is being replaced by the Ghost.
Which ever brand and model works for you. There is no best.
I agree with Brooks. They do so much more than the Hanson's to sponsor runners and help them develop through their ID program. They give so much back to the running community and in my opinion they make the best running hats.
Mizuno for shoes.
Nike for clothes. I love their Tempo shorts.
If you are asking "running brand", my answer is Brooks.
