I'm 25 and have been running for about a year. I am a road racer and train exclusively in racing flats. I run longer distances with 5Ks being the shortest distance I race. However, since I come from the slow side (was pretty sedentary my entire life) I need to do quite a bunch of speedwork to build my fine speed. I have been doing my speedwork on a track in my racing flats but I think spikes would be a lot better. I usually do 4 x 1600s and 6 x 800s (both @ 5K-3K pace); and also 10 x 100s and 6 x 200s (both @ 1500-400m pace).
Should I go with a long-distance spike or a middle distance one to run these workouts? Any recommendations on any specific spike that you guys run in? I run in Adizero RC DC and Brooks T5 for my other runs (this info may help). And this may seem like a stupid question, but do runners wear socks while running in spikes? Any help would be appreciated.
