Matt Tegenkamp's core workout

he's said before that most of it is just body weight stuff and they don't use free weights a lot. thats just as far as his core work goes though.

Well....I guess he doesn't need as much seeing as how he's focusing on the 10K now.

i thought core strength meant abs and back, not legs, arms, ect.

Core strength seems to have a bunch of meanings anymore. I'm wondering if it is more benefeficial to work on core endurance(like matt) or strength. It seems to me that lifting like he does would do very little for strength gains. I could be worng.

But I'm sure it was funny last year when you were still a senior at HS...

Matt Tegankamp does not run the 10k and apparently does or has done this core workout. However, as a collegiate 10k runner do you think that this core workout of a 5k runner (Matt Tegankamp)could help a 10k runner (me) or am I just way off base? Help Please!

Having coached athletes who do routines similar to this for years I will be the first to tell you that even though they do the same routine all the time they always have to refer back to the paper. Its a crutch for them and as such they never memorize the routine.

Well I actually went ahead and tried that workout today. I got the impression that he just moves from one exercise to another for an endurance stimulas and let me tell you it's tougher than it looks.With the upper body part I used 3 lb dumbells like him and figured it would be easy. After all is said and done you do like 100 reps and your shoulders and latts are screaming. In the end I was pretty shot like after a light workout. I was always lifting heavier weights and taking long recoveries. My take is that this is more designed to improve muscular endurance. I did not expect it to be as hard as it was.

Thanks for your input! It amazes me how many people will give an opinion without trying something first. Obviously, this workout has some benefits for the distance runners. Progression is the key (more reps and or more weight) Matt has used this workout for years now and more than anything, he is healthy and a bit stronger than before. Getting a huge strength increase is not his goal (nor should it be)
