It turns out Denise's sob story about her being forced to be a janitor after the Survivor show was a big lie. She actually got a raise from the job she was doing and it was a promotion to be a janitor. She didn't win the million but she was effective at begging her way to $50,000.

She is now saying she won't keep the money. It is complete bull that she didn't intend to make people feel badly for her. She just got caught and would look like a real craplog if she kept the money.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Denise Martin, who gained fame as the lunch lady on CBS' reality show "Survivor: China," is donating the $50,000 she received from producer Mark Burnett to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDs Foundation.
"It was not my intention to be misleading," Martin, 40, said on the broadcast. "I'm sorry, and I apologize to everybody."
I don't watch the show, but doesn't the winner get $1 million? Who would do all that crap for only $50,000?
She didn't win. When they announce the winner, they have other contestants come back and talk about their experiences on the show.
On the reunion show, she told a sob story that her life sucks since she returned home from the show. She made it seem like the school where she worked before going on the show wouldn't let her keep the job she had before the show. It was a real downer.
The show threw some cash at her so viewers wouldn't feel bad for her. The host of Survivor said something like the producer is going to give you $50,000 so you can get your life back on track. It turns out her sad story wasn't true. She actually got a promotion where she would be paid more and had better benefits when she returned home.
The problem for her is that someone spent five minutes of research into her story and she got caught.
I watched the show a few times the first season but never since. It's astonishingly contrived, has nothing to do with actual wilderness survival, and conniving is prized more than any physical skills. It shows me nothing about the human condition that I need to know, and it's not sexy or funny.
