Does anyone else consider these athletes to be in the right place at the right time?
Meb as a silver medalist in the marathon has never run another performance in the marathon that compares. After that performance he was never able to put it all together to WIN in any international field.
Meyer, very similarly was the last American Male to win Boston in 2:09:00 and never came close to that marathon performance again.
Is the marathon such a crap shoot that you never can tell what is going to happen? or are they both just glorified (because it happened on a huge stage) one hit wonders?
Or is there no such thing as one hit wonders? If so, how do we explain a Trent Briney?
Greg Meyer Vs, Meb

I don't know what you are talking about, because Meyer also won Chicago, and set two world records on the road in the 15k and ten mile.
-
But never an Olympian. Rather a gaping hole if one wants to be considered among the best don't you think?
-
Meyer also won detroit but that was back when Chicago was a second rate marathon. I believe he ran 2:12. He Didn't make the 1984 Olympic Team and that was only a year after his vicroty in Boston.
Other distance have nothing to do with my original question. I am trying to see how much the MARATHON is a crap shoot? -

No. I would put winning Boston and Chicago ahead of "making an Olympic team". -
I agree. Rod Dehaven ranks well below Greg Meyer in my book. So was Meyer a one hit wonder? What about Meb thus far?
I AM ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE MARATHON. -
I meant that I agree with Boston. Not Chicago back then, 2:12 was not that impressive.
-
No doubt Meyer's Boston win was far and away his best marathon performance.
-
Meb has second and third place finishes in very loaded NYC Marathons
-
LOADED???????????????
-
they were loaded. Every year NYC is the second strongest field among the big city marathons. You can say Meb's third at boston wasn't up to par but even then its still a world class performance. There may not be 15 sub 2:08 guys in Boston but there are 5 to 10 depending on the year, top 3 is still a hell of a run. But to call meyer or meb a one hit wonder in the marathon is pretty dumb.
-
Yeah, they were loaded. Do some homework
-
I would have to put Greg's Cherry Blossom 10 mile and Gasparilla 15k record up there with his best. 46:13 and 43:07 is flying. also ran a 27:53 on the track in lead up to Boston...I think it was by himself and in pretty shitty conditions if I remember correctly.
-
Over the past 10 years Chicago has a much stronger field than Newy York. Top 10 in Chicago is equivelant to top 5 in New York. Boston and New York is about the same. London is going away the most difficult for a top 5 finish. Meb will finish 8-12 in London. He can finish top 5 in both Boston and New York every year. 6-10 in Chicago.
-
For the record. I did not say that Meb is a one hit wonder. He is a very solid marathoner. He will never win a major though. He is not now nor has he ever been a strong enough finisher to win. Still a great career though.
-
London has by far the strongest men's field, but the "Chicago is stronger than New York" argument no longer holds up, and in the future, New York will eclipse Chicago even more. Chicago has problems.
-
Perhaps you are correct as we go forward. But during the years that Meb was finishing in the top 3 at New York, Chicago was a tougher field.
-
Meyer's Achilles went bad not long after Boston and that cut his high level career short.
Remember, that was back in the day when guys ran races every weekend or every other weekend in order to make some decent money. -
Getting back to the original point, yeah, the marathon is a tremendous crap shoot. Meb has had a solid career, and he managed to put it all together on a day when other "better" runners failed to. He will be recognized for that feat for a long, long time, I hope.

Meyer was a horse who had to duel it out weekly against Lindsay, Pfeffer, Curp, Sinclair, Virgin, Rodgers, Salazar, Cummings, Bjorklund, Durden and the great malmo. Meb ran a couple great 10Ks and a great Olympic marathon but if my money were being wagered, I'd put it all behind Meyer.
