I'm becoming more and more convinced of the uselessness ab regimens a lot of distance runners, and especially high school teams, are way into.
First, what's our objective? As I understand it, strengthening the core prevents injury and improves posture and therefore efficiency. Specifically, this results when when the hip muscles, the lower back, and the lower abs are strengthened, because they act as stabilizers.
From everything I've read, and my own experience, it seems like the goal should be to strengthen the core. And the key word is strengthen. How much do all the endurance exercises really help? I simply don't understand their application to our objective.
My conclusion is that low rep loaded core exercises are the way to go, with a little bit of endurance thrown in on the side.
Thoughts? Does anyone know of any programs or coaches that agree with me on this? If anyone is doing this sort of training, what exercises are you doing? I'm somewhat in the dark. Thanks.
